What is Vitamin C?

Ascrobic Acid = Vitamin C = Great for skin!

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is important to human health for a variety of reasons, from boosting the immune system to acting as an antioxidant. It has many benefits for the skin, too. By working as an antioxidant, vitamin C helps increase collagen production and combats the effects of free-radicals that result from pollutants, overexposure to the sun, and other harmful effects. Studies have also shown that it can help reduce skin inflammation. In addition to improving general health, it has several other cosmetic benefits for skin.

What Vitamin C Is And Does

Vitamin C is called an antioxidant and a co-enzyme. Chemically, it bonds with other compounds to create a new compound. When working as an antioxidant, Vitamin C bonds with free radicals—lone electrons looking for a place to call home to neutralize their charge.

Free radicals can be highly destructive, breaking up other chemical bonds to make a place for themselves. When this happens in the skin, it results in damage to compounds in the dermal matrix, including collagen and elastin—the proteins that give skin its firmness and resilience. However, when free radicals are bound to an antioxidant, they are simply neutralized with no resulting damage to other proteins or tissues.

Vitamin C Is Needed For Collagen Production

Our bodies use vitamin C to help make collagen. Unfortunately, environmental pollutants and exposure to UV light can lower the amount of vitamin C your body creates naturally. Without the support of vitamin C, collagen and connective tissues begin to break down. Collagen is one of the key components in the dermal matrix that gives your skin its elasticity, tone and texture. Collagen levels and production naturally decline as we age, and as a result, skin sags and wrinkles. Boosting collagen production increases your skin’s resilience to mnimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Combining Vitamin C With Specific Ingredients Makes It More Powerful

There are certain skin care ingredients that can amplify Vitamin C’s effects. For example, studies show that a blend of ascorbic acid (pure Vitamin C), vitamin E and ferulic acid help Vitamin C protect skin from thedamage of UV rays.

Vitamin C Is An All-Around Essential

Vitamin C’s role in collagen production is not the only reason it’s good for mature skin. Vitamin C is also vital to skin repair and protection. Studies show that Vitamin C can help filter environmental pollutants that can harm your skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and skin brightening effects to even skin tone and diminish areas of hyperpigmentation and melasma by helping to breakdown pigment deposits to fade age spots (also called liver spots), freckles and redness.

Vitamin C – The Hale Difference

“Pure” vitamin C—the form that is immediately useful to the body—is L-Ascorbic Acid. In this form 100% of vitamin C is available for use by your cells. Derivatives of L-Ascorbic Acid include:

  • Sodium Ascorbate
  • Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate
  • Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate
  • Ascorbyl Palmitate
  • Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate

When these other forms of vitamin C are converted to L-Ascorbic Acid, they lose some of their potency. So, depending on the form, ounce for ounce, your cells are only getting between 13% and 95% of vitamin C.

When used in skin care products, the form and its potency make a big difference. If a vitamin C serum contains ascorbyl palmitate, for instance, the formula can only deliver 40% of vitamin C’s full potential. But Hale vitamin C products only contain the purest form of vitamin C: L-Ascorbic Acid.

Vitamin C Stability

Vitamin C is an antioxidant, and antioxidants don’t discriminate when it comes to neutralizing free radicals—they begin their work immediately. That means that in an unstable formula, vitamin C will spend its antioxidant power neutralizing the free radicals in your moisturizer or serum, particularly if the formula is exposed to air, heat and light, which incite and speeds up the oxidation process.

In order to keep vitamin C stable so that it doesn’t start neutralizing anything until it reaches your skin, it must be delivered in a carefully formulated vehicle. Hale products are made using cold water processing to preserve vitamin C’s antioxidizing potential, and our serums are carefully formulated, often with vitamin E, to minimize anti-oxidation happening in the jar but boost anti-oxidizing activity when applied to your skin.

Research shows that the highest concentration of vitamin C your body will use is 20%, so that’s the highest concentration of vitamin C use in Hale formulations.

At Hale Cosmeceuticals, we know science and we know Vitamin C. We are confident that our products will deliver the best results for your skin.
